The city of Thane is situated on the western banks of Thane creek with Parsik hills on the east and Yeoor hills on the west. The city was then know as Shreesthanak. It was more popularly known as the Capital of the Shilahar dynasty. The history of Thane city can be broadly categorized into 5 eras.

‘Aparant’ is the ancient name of the geographical area hosting Thane city. During the Indian expedition of the Greek Emperor Alexander, a number of philosophers, historians and geographists visited India. Among them a Greek historian ‘Tolemi’ has mentioned about the city of Thane in his writings. A famous sailor named Marcopolo had also visited Thane in 1290 ‘A.D. and noted it to be one of the best cities in the world. A place called | ‘Ghodbunder was famous for horse trading thus deriving its name from the word ghoda i.e. horse and bunder meaning port.

During this period a fabric called ‘Tansi’ was exported from Thane. During the period from 13 A.D. to 17 A.D., the Muslims, Portuguese, Marathas, & the British dynasties ruled Thane. From 810A.D. to 1260A.D. the Shilahar Dynasty ruled over Thane. The Emperors of Shilahar dynasty were disciples of Lord Shiva and the Kopineshwar Temple has been built during their reign. During this period, At this time the Shilahars also divided the city into different sections and named them as ‘padas’. it is seen that these padas exist even today by names of Naupada, Patlipada, Agripada etc.

Oxygen Park, Rajmata Jijau Udyan Garden, Tulsidham, Thane West

A small garden with lots of ancient banyan trees and medicinal plants. This garden was opened in 2025. Good for morning and evening walks. It has lots of dense trees like a mini forest with small models and statues as well as an open library. This garden is situated near Tulsidham behind Hiranandani meadows. Medicinal plants have also been planted as well as mango tree saplings for Aamrai. This garden was named Oxygen Park owing to the density of plants and trees. There are two banyan trees inside which are very old. Also a big Bodhi tree (Pipal tree) is inside where an idol of Gautam Buddha is placed. Garden is named after Rajmata Jijau, mother of Chhattrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

Morning: 6:00 to 10:00

Evening: 4:00 to 7:00

Mogharpada Heart Shaped Lake Fountain, Ovala, Koliwada, Thane West

Mogharpada is the only heart shaped lake in Thane West situated in Koliwada village in Ovala region near Kasarvadavali. This lake also has a temple beside the lake as well as during saturdays daily market is available here. The fountain is beautiful which dances along with the music and quite big. The fountain timings are 7:00 PM to 7:30 PM and 8:00 PM to 8:30 PM everyday.

Dadoji Konddev Stadium, Thane West

Built in 1982, The Dadoji Konddev Stadium, also known as SR Bhosle Krida Sankul Stadium, is a sports stadium in Thane West with the spectator capacity is 33,000. Dadoji Stadium is only stadium in Thane with a 400-meter running track and many of the athletics events which are conducted here. Dadoji Konddev was an administrator of the Pune jagir and nearby Kondana fort after which the stadium is named.
